FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Summerfield, NC--  Freshly downsized from Hanes Brands, Inc., Karen Best “makes it work” in a tough employment market… stylishly!

As fallout from the Apparel and Textile industry, twice…Ms. Best is combining her educational background and design experience into a series of Project Runway “like” clinics to prepare aspiring designers for college and their career.  The camp is intended for rising high schools students and career minded individuals who want to enter the fashion industry.

Fashion Illustration, Draping, Computer Aided Design, and Portfolio development are a few of the topics to be covered in the five day intensive.  Life skills such as yoga, sustainability, empowerment, focus, and goal setting will be woven throughout the five days.

The week will culminate with a fashion show produced by the designers. They will model an outfit refashioned from a vintage garment they’ll shop for.  Each will have their hair and make-up done professionally as part of the production.

The participants will receive a bevy of supplies to include a sewing kit with fabric shears, a 9 x 12 professional Portfolio, photos of their camp work, sketch pad & graphite pencils, t-shirt, spending allowance, as well as lunch on the terrace each day.

The first Fashion Boot Camp will take place June 22-26, 2009, 9:30am–5pm Monday through Friday. The Fashion Show/Winners’ Reception will be 5pm till 7pm on Friday of the session.  The designers will be able to invite their families and friends to attend.  The camp will be duplicated in July in Forsyth and Rockingham counties.

Fashion Boot Camp will take place at Studio B at the Broach, a chic urban space, downtown Greensboro.  Local caterers, speakers, stylists, consultants and businesses will be utilized during the camp’s execution.

Ms. Best is working on scholarship opportunities from local and national Fashion Colleges for those who complete the camp.  She will provide the latest catalogs, fashion course study and resources from these institutions to assist the students.

Karen Best has a Bachelors Degree in Apparel and Textile Design with a focus on CAD and minor in Art.  She has owned and operated Matrix Computer Concepts, Inc for 11 years providing web design, hosting, and Internet Solutions for her clients.  She is the founder of a Healing Arts program formerly known as the “Hat Attack,”  The custom designed program uses the power of dress to create a healing space for cancer patients.  Ms. Best is the creative mind behind GSO’s Summer Solstice Celebration and founder of the Goddess Market held each year at the Arboretum.  Following suit, this dress up event uses the power of clothing/costumes/apparel, to instill a state of well being.  Karen is a first time author with 2 books coming out this year, “Hat Magic” and “Admission” both about her work in healing arts programs using apparel design.  Her latest design project was with Hanes Brands, Inc. working on the technical design team that handles Champion and C9 inner and outer wear for Men, Women, Boys, and Girls.

Shaping fashionistas for future

Sunday, April 12, 2009

One down-sized designer wants to help future fashion moguls shape up.

Former Hanes designer Karen Best is looking to use her background in apparel and textiles to teach three Fashion Boot Camp sessions to aspiring designers.

“They will come for five days from 9:30 to 5 to learn fashion illustration, draping and they’ll do some (computer assisted design),” Best said.

The students will be challenged to design an outfit on the computer.
“This is the stuff they can take into their college career and even in their life,” Best said.

The boot camp is designed to accommodate 20 high school and college-age students, but she is open to having students as young as 13 and older than traditional college age.

“I’m not going to turn anyone away if they have a flare for it and are genuinely interested,” she said.

In addition to the computer assisted design, the students will re-fashion garments purchased at local thrift stores. This task serves two purposes.

“I’m a big conservationist,” Best said. “We’ll talk about re-purposing, re-cycling and making sure the companies we use are as green as they can be.”

The second purpose is to have the student-run fashion show at the end of the week.

“These are the garments that will be worn in the fashion show,” she said.

Sewing machines will not be available, so unless students have their own, they’ll have to alter the garments by hand.

The fashion show will also give the students some hands-on experience in the fashion industry.

“It’s not like what you see on TV,” she said.

Best will also use local hairstylists and makeup artists.

“It’s like my own little way of stimulating the local economy,” she said.

The sessions will be in Guilford, Forsyth and Randolph counties.
The Guilford County session will be held from June 22 through 26 at Studio B at the Broach Theater in Greensboro.

The other sessions will be held in Winston-Salem and Madison.
